Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Adopting In-House IV Compounding with Omnicell’s IV Robotics

Investments in Automation Position Hospital for Long Term Savings and Patient Safety

February 12, 2018

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.

Omnicell, Inc., (NASDAQ: OMCL), today announced that California’s Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) has chosen to automate sterile compounding in their pharmacy operations with Omnicell IV solutions, part of the Company’s industry-leading medication management automation platform. Leveraging Omnicell’s robotic technology will help PVHMC to support patient safety, while reducing costs previously associated with outsourcing sterile compounding services. PVHMC plans to implement the robots in May, with compounding operations beginning later this year.

PVHMC joins many leading health systems who are adopting recommendations by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) for the implementation of automation and technology in sterile compounding.1 PVHMC is among the top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals in the United States to receive the Healthgrades® Patient Safety Excellence Award.2

The medical center will implement two i.v.STATIONTM non-hazardous compounding robots to drive improvements in their sterile compounding operation. With the smallest footprint on the market, i.v.STATION helps hospitals and health systems to further enhance patient safety, improve therapy, reduce cost, and facilitate compliance in the IV room.

“As a director, I’m tasked with ensuring that patient safety is our top priority, while still reducing expenses,” said Michael Campbell, PharmD, MBA, director of pharmacy at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. “IV robotics will help us streamline our compounding processes, allowing us to redirect financial and clinical time savings to activities that support clinical care. By improving our processes, we’re able to deliver the best products to patients.”

“Ensuring IV doses are prepared safely, accurately, and cost-effectively is oftentimes overwhelming for hospital pharmacies,” said Doug Descalzi, vice president and GM, IV Solutions at Omnicell. “We’re committed to partnering with customers like PVHMC to deliver automation solutions and services that support their needs today, but also grow as healthcare challenges continue to evolve.”
