In conducting their work, anesthesia
providers utilize both medications and supplies, and
increasingly, they face regulatory, organizational and economic
pressures to ensure medication safety, accomplish charge
capture, and help facilitate inventory control.
Regarding
the issue of medication safety, the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Medication Management
Standard 2.20 requires that "medications are properly and safely
stored throughout the hospital." Similarly, the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services Condition of Participation for
Pharmaceutical Services, Section 482.25 (b) (2) states, "Drugs
and biologicals must be kept in a locked storage area...in a
manner to prevent access by non-authorized individuals."
Omnicell provides innovative systems to satisfy the unique needs
of the anesthesia provider in the operating room. The systems
help facilities meet regulatory requirements pertaining to
medication management, while providing clinicians with the
convenience and time to focus on patient care. Omnicell's
Anesthesia Workstation is a mobile system for the management of
anesthesia supplies and medications that is tailored for the
workflow of the clinician at the point of care. The Anesthesia
TT is a unique, fixed-position tabletop unit designed as a
medication-only system.
According to a study by Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano
conducted in 2005, use of Omnicell's Anesthesia Workstation resulted
in charge capture rates significantly higher than that experienced
with Pyxis' Anesthesia System.
